Observation Narrative
Typha angustifolia dominates the most inland section of the tidal marsh along Bush Mill Stream and is fringed on either side by Spartina cynosuroides. Total area of this dominance patch is perhaps 0.3 - 0.4 ha. Substrate is considerably firmer than underneath Spartina cynosuroides, owing to a very dense rhizome mat or perhaps to less frequent tidal inundation. Less than 1 cm of surface water is present at time of sampling (4:00 PM), but high water mark is evident on Typha culms 8-10 cm above marsh surface, and some siltation is apparent above that level. More than half of the Typha biomass has already senesced.
Wet, dark brown muck, abounding in organic matter. Very thick mat of Typha rhizomes and firm roots extends in places to a depth of > 1 m. Elsewhere water table encountered within 50 cm.
